Hello, Yuletide author!

Let me just say first and foremost that the reason I got into fandom to begin with was due to a tendency to latch onto minor characters and milk the backstory out of them even if I had to fill in 90% of the gaps myself. I love getting to see other people's takes on their inner workings and I'm not picky about the direction your interpretation takes as long as you write it credibly. It can be the most outrageous space coffeeshop high school AU known to humanity and I'll eat it up with a spoon the size of Saturn if you sell me on it. One thing I love about Yuletide is how it stretches the creativity of everyone involved and I always enjoy seeing just how wildly different another person's approach to canon can be from my own. Any rating is fine by me, and you're free to write anything from happiness or horror.

That said, I'm not a fan of crossovers (especially if I don't know the source material), soulmate AU's (they just make me want to pick apart the plot holes and the idea of characters being literally made for each other does nothing for me), or fic being used as either a battering ram or a soapbox. Also here's the obligatory mention that I'd prefer no kinks that involve bodily fluids better suited for the bathroom. No shame in that if it's your thing, it just isn't mine.

If you need clarification on any point, I'm re-crudescence on tumblr and you're welcome to send me an anonymous ask. I'm less active on LJ and DW, but anon comments either of these places are fine as well.

Now that you know a little something about me, and I obviously know that you're here because you have impeccable taste in small fandoms...

Yuletide happened! I wasn't able to read as voraciously as I did last year, so I haven't collated enough data for a recs post as of now. But I was, unlike last year, able to write more than one fic. I also learned a lot about Senegalese animist beliefs and the perils of creating sock Tumblrs (not for the same fic).

Great Scott, I've created life itself!

Hi, wow, it's...the first time I've posted here since last Yuletide. Consistency is important. This is, what, the fifth year I've done Yuletide? And there are so many awesome fandoms to get excited about, I never had a prayer at keeping myself away.

That said, the reason I got into fandom to begin with was out of an tendency to latch onto background characters and milk the backstory out of them. So quite a lot of my requests involve characters who I'd very much like to learn more about in canon. I love getting to see other people's takes on their inner workings and I'm not picky about the direction your interpretation takes as long as you write it credibly. It can be the most outrageous space coffeeshop high school AU known to humanity and I'll eat it up with a spoon the size of Saturn if you sell me on it. Slightly belated salutations to you, bringer of Yuletide cheer! I'm super excited you're writing for me and I hope this post is helpful to you.

First things first, the number-one factor I look for in a fic is credibility. If you decide to write a genderswapped fic where everyone speaks only in iambic pentameter, that's fabulous! As long as you sell me on it and it doesn't come across like you've shoved a bunch of TVtropes pages into a blender just to see what comes out. One thing I love about Yuletide is how it stretches the creativity of everyone involved and I always enjoy seeing just how wildly different another person's approach to canon can be from my own. Any rating is fine by me, but I'm not a fan of fic being used as either a battering ram for some undesirable character or a soapbox for your thoughts on whatever it is the canon's done wrong. That said, I've honestly never received a Yuletide fic I didn't enjoy and I'm sure whatever you come up with will be made of glory and snickerdoodles.

If you need further details on anything, you can always send me an anon ask on Tumblr, where I'm yviwashere.

In 2013, I resolve to find productive ways to fill my time now that I'm done with grad school. This does not entail gluing myself to the internet.

And hey, Yuletide happened! I wrote You Are My Fifth Avenue for [livejournal.com profile] seondoks, who wanted Whip It fic about Bliss and Pash. It basically gave me an excuse to fangirl over an awesome movie all over again and to read Derby Girl, the book that inspired it.

I also slipped in a second fic, Prakriti, for [personal profile] holli, who wanted Sara Crewe from A Little Princess and Mary Lennox from The Secret Garden to meet during World War I. This came out a little more somber than I anticipated. WHO'D HAVE THUNK.

Whew, I finally managed to do my Yuletide flailing/reccing post! You can find it on Tumblr or right here:

Gentles all, here you will find a quick and dirty roster of Yuletide fics that made me flail particularly hard. It's by no means exhaustive (uh, there are like three thousand fucking fics, hello) and I'm sure I'll find even more to flail about as I continue reading. I hope everyone's had a merry Yuletide experience!

Here we go. In no particular order:

  • Hold up, I lied, this one is first for a reason. Priceless is the tender tale of two young ladies discovering life and each other, complete with plenty of hot lesbian sex. This was the first Yuletide fic I read and the pairing alone had me grinning like mad. Did I mention it's a crossover between 10 Things I Hate About You and Bring It the fuck On? Because it fucking is. Kat and Missy are roommates, Kat is a baby social justice activist, Missy does martial arts, and it's all so early 2000's it makes me yearn for my Discman.

  • Once upon a time I saw this movie called Cracks where Eva Green plays the uber-chic and slightly unhinged swimming coach at a British all-girls boarding school. There were, like, schoolgirl crushes and intrigue and backstabbing all over the fucking place and everything was so gorgeous I didn't really care how fucked up it all was. The Ruins is a stunningly plausible look at what happens when Di returns to school years after the events in the movie. I'm pleased as punch this exists because Cracks was the fandom at the very top of my things-I-want-for-Yuletide list.

  • Teahouse was another one of the fandoms on my want list. Yeah, the yaoi webcomic about fancy whores. And there are not one, but two fics for it this year! Storm in a Teahouse is a Rhys/Axis fic that finally, finally addresses the weird lack of awareness everyone seems to have about the royal family. It's just the sort of dramatic reveal I can see playing out in canon, and there's also some hot sex. Just putting that out there.
BUT WAIT, THERE'S MORE )

Oh snap, is it Yuletide o'clock? I DO BELIEVE IT IS!

Brienne of Tarth has nothing to do with any of my requested fandoms, but she rocks my socks and did a stellar job of making this post less empty before I dumped some actual content in it.

And hey, speaking of content! )

Hello, strangers!

I've been MIA around these parts lately thanks to an overabundance of school, work, writing assignments, and holiday runarounds, but now that I actually have some downtime it's harder than ever to get reacquainted with the intricacies of actually posting here. What I have been doing is keeping up with my flist (for the most part), even though I haven't been commenting as much, and my Twitter feed when possible.

So, that said, I'm going to pimp some things now.

For those of you who enjoy podfic, [personal profile] sophinisba has taken on the unholy trilogy of the Sickness and Shame verse and, to the best of my knowledge, still has a voice. You can find all three here, and please leave her feedback if you have the time!

Yuletide is in full swing and the reveal is just around the corner, but I can't wait to gush about the fics I've gotten. Growing Together is a Last Unicorn fic about Molly Grue and Schmendrick making their way in the world after the events in canon. I asked specifically for anything to do with Molly and the author gave her a well-deserved happy ending wrapped up in a narrative that could have come straight out of a coda to the novel. Also, Schmendrick fails at growing a proper wizard's beard.

I also got a treat from another Ghostwriter fan (seriously, that was my show growing up, in all its uber-'90s glory): Eventually We Find Our Way gives us a very plausible look at Rob several years down the road--I always felt like he got the short end of the stick, since not only was he shy to begin with, he had to go and move to Australia--and some of the decisions he faces when he comes back to New York.

Inception fandom's festivus this time around was [livejournal.com profile] dream_holiday and just today I got an excellent fic from [profile] iri_descent. In The Great Game, Arthur and Eames gradually learn each other very well despite being apart for months at a time. I adore the Arthur characterization in this, and the way both of them are drawn to each other but not at all defined by each other. They're both very much professionals here and the author fleshes out their world so deftly that everything seems perfectly natural. I really enjoy it when there are little references to the world of dreaming, or to things that will later come up canonically, and the really beautiful thing is that I didn't mention this at all in my request and just so happened to land a writer with wonderful attention to detail anyway. There also just so happens to be a kitten and a bit of awesome Yusuf/Eames friendship.

And tomorrow, I am going to bake banana bread and party it up! Happy New Year in advance, guys, and thank you for making 2011 a lot more fun.
