Pet peeve time!

1) If you do not run your fic by a beta, please do not announce it in your author's note. What's the point? I can't imagine it's going to get you any readers.

2) PHASE vs. FAZE, omg. You go through a phase. You may be fazed by it. I see this mistake so often I almost started to doubt myself.

3) Criminal Minds, you're already on my bad side for what you're doing to JJ and Prentiss. Can you at least throw me a bone and make Garcia's lipstick a little less garish? I'm trying to find something to be pleased with, but you're really making me work for it.

4) Glee, Jacob Ben Israel is expendable and don't you forget it.

5) Inception, it really kind of irks me that every main character except Yusuf gets one of those big nifty mosaic-framed promo shots. Or if he did get one, I've certainly never seen it. Chubby brown guys need to get repped, too.

...hi, I'm a little cranky. I think I'll go finish S1 of Carnivale.

Hi, I'm anxious for no good reason. Wanna hang out?

Ahahaha, excellent! I can...grouse at you and then you can relieve some anxiety by knocking a little sense into me? This is potentially fabulous.

...ohai, also, I'm going to attempt banana bread tomorrow (or the day after, depending on the state of the bananas). This is one of maybe three things I can competently make from scratch, so I'm hoping I don't screw it up.

That seems to be how things go for a lot of conversations I have. I should hire myself out as a professional mood booster.

Banana bread's an excellent thing to make! I've done it a couple of times. You could be adventurous and throw in bits of dried fruit, or a few peanut-butter chips.

At least then the extra income might help your mood and you'd get a little something back. Or maybe you just need friends who talk about rabbits and rainbows a little more often.

I was thinking maybe cinnamon, just to make it a little more autumnal. I'm in this stage where I want to eat pumpkin-spice EVERYTHING, only I'm not sure ginger would fare so well in banana bread.

Tonight's just one of those free-floating anxiety phases that I get every so often which come out of nowhere and always seem strange the next morning. If I had my CDs with me, I'd put on Rubber Soul or something.

Okay, maybe not nowhere: I'm a little disappointed at the people who claimed my Big Bang pieces for mixes and art, and I'm frustrated that the dryer didn't get my pants fully dried out. I'll see about an episode of Frasier or something. Or bunnies.

Dried cherries aren't exactly seasonal, but would go with the bananas, and also mace or allspice.

Ah, that's lousy, when little things crop up like that and sort of coagulate into a bad mood. Still, if kicking back with something nice and low-maintenance is really the best medicine, no reason to fight it. I'm either going to polish off Carnivale or just try and go to bed.

I remembered I have some feel-good Mike Doughty music on here - "I Just Want The Girl In The Blue Dress To Keep On Dancing" always perks me up - and now I'm looking at blue dresses on Etsy. I might move to Title Nine in a bit. Worrying about finding a dress I like is about the most maintenance I want right now.

And I'm cuddling my bunny (http://www.peacetoys.com/The-Foundling-Collection/Foundling-Bunny.html), which always helps.

I know, what's with them not giving Yusuf a character promo shot? *is grumpy about it too*

I'm tempted to write Yusuf Does Everyone fic. Because having very-possibly-terrible porn written about an under-appreciated character is so totally going to make TPTB see the error of their ways. IT ARE FACT.

...or maybe Dileep was just out sick the day everyone else got their glamor shots taken. Idk.

Hee, I would totally read Yusuf Does Everyone fic!

I did see a fan-created promo shot of Yusuf on tumblr that was pretty awesome, but now I don't remember where to find it. *starts searching through my bookmarks*

He's a chemist! All he needs to do is spike the coffeepot with an aphrodisiac and set up a camcorder. He's friends with Eames, which means he's got to be a little more devious than he appears. (Omfg, aaaand I think it's time for me to sleep because now I'm picturing the two of them as Kuzco and Yzma from The Emperor's New Groove. "This isn't Somnacin! This is extract. of. LLAMA!")

As great as it is that something like that exists, it shouldn't fall to the fans to make up for the director's/producer's/publicity team's failings. *shakes fists*

I saw a fic announcement on an LJ comm I belong to, and I fully intended to read it until I came upon the part that said, "I didn't use a beta reader and I don't care about spelling and grammar mistakes. Deal with it." And there was a spelling error in the LJ-cut text. Guess what I DIDN'T read.

Yeah, that isn't off-putting in the slightest. Having a cavalier outlook on your work is one thing, but some tidbits are better left unsaid than advertised, you know?

ITA on everything. Especially the Glee and CM ranting.

(God, I need to re-watch Carnivale.)

Heather Morris can dance like a mofo, so those parts of Glee? Super. Rachel, Jacob, and Will? Near-fatal amounts of secondhand embarrassment. When I have to hold my hand in front of the screen, it's just bad.

(Guh, I was watching an ep with the commentary on for the first time and everyone was talking about the "dark sexuality" between Justin and Iris and for some reason that squicks me far, far less than Jonesy banging Rita Sue and then Libby. I'm not sure why. Justin is the Usher of Destruction, so perving on his sister is hunky-dory, I guess.)

1. LORD YES. There was one I saw the other day with an unbeta'd warning and I was really offended by it for a variety of reasons.

5. Yusuf never gets enough love. D: D: D:

It just seems sloppy to me. If you don't use a beta, no big deal, but if you feel the need to let everyone know about it...just find a damn beta. Gnerf.

3) I'm hoping bitterly that the "there's plenty of big, strong men around here" line was intended by the writers to be every bit as pointed as I construed it to be.

That was such an "ohhhh, snap" moment. I want to keep liking this show, but it's hanging onto my good graces by a thread at this point. And Reid's hairstyle is not tipping the scales for me at all.

I feel the need to say "This has not been betaed" aka "jsyk, I am aware it is a mess, there is no need to inform me" so people will be less likely to give me a non-con beta in a comment, which has happened to me. If that means they don't read it, whatevs.

posted by [identity profile] recrudescence.livejournal.com at 01:23pm on 30/09/2010
Idk, I just assume that if an author thinks something they've written is a mess, they'd naturally want to post it when it's...less of a mess. Personally, I suck at using betas, so I'm grateful when someone points out in a comment that I've made a typo or switched tenses somewhere. As long as they aren't being holier-than-thou about it.

Yes to unbetaed warnings(I'm of the strong belief that if you feel the need to apologize upfront for the quality of your fic, then you probably shouldn't be posting it, though I'm sure I've done it in the past as well).

I can't say anything about Glee because I'm wondering whether I actually want to watch 2x02. I really don't like where they've gone, and I don't know if I want to trust them enough to see where they're going.

Re. Yusuf: This icon. It was the 2nd icon I picked up for Inception and seriously. What bothers me the most, I think, isn't just that he's rarely the "star" of fic. It's how he's generally treated in so many of the fics he's in (comic relief, silly, always eating sloppily, etc.). Gr.

Heh, I've apologized for posting fic before, but only due to the subject matter ("omg, this is totally incest/angsty/tentacle porn, sorry!"), and I don't mind when others do it in that respect, but for some reason proclaiming one's lack of a beta just grinds my gears.

Glee is...it's Glee. And it's been at a plateau for me for quite a while, but given these last two episodes I'm ready to say it's officially going downhill. It was good to see Brittany get some screentime, which is something I hope they'll do with the rest of the under-showcased cast members, but the constant rehashing of the same storylines and the increasingly iffy subjects they use for humorous purposes have me giving the show some major side-eyes.

It's true, Yusuf does get left out most of the time, which I always find sort of amusing when the rest of the gang, including Robert and/or Saito are present in fic. Srsly, those two characters are tied for Most Likely To Move On With Their Lives. He's not traditionally swoon-worthy like Arthur or Eames, but he's smart and interesting and is it really so hard to remember he exists and shoehorn him into a scene now and again?

I'll generally put an "unbeta'd" in the notes, as a sort of notice to readers that it's find to let me know if there's a typo or some egregious error I've managed to miss. Generally my feeling is (and I could be wrong) that people are less likely to point that stuff out if the fic has been beta'd because they don't want to step on the beta's toes. That's how I feel, anyway. So instead of throwing myself open to beta by gangbang, I'll just put the note in there and that way people can bring stuff to my attention without feeling like they're taking liberties.

YMMV.

I've always been under the impression that people who want to point out errors are going to do it anyway. That's just been my experience. No beta is perfect, and it's possible for a third party to catch a mistake and mention it without being a presumptuous ass.

May be my own weirdness. If there's a beta credited, I'm a little less likely to point stuff out, especially if the beta is someone I know.
