Wow.
Yesterday, I was on Facebook and got a message from my former best friend, this girl I'll call Mao. We had a falling-out for a sublimely stupid reason when I was in college, then a year or so later I swung by her house to say hello. She never contacted me again after that and I decided making an effort just wasn't going to change anything.
It's strange. When we met, I was this meek, bookish dork and she was this outgoing people magnet who had no bones about speaking her mind to anyone. She was also the first girl I honestly fell for, something I finally told her during fall break of my freshman year when I was visiting her campus, which resulted in me hiding out in the basement of the Antioch College library. I kind of figured if our friendship could survive that it could survive anything.
Last night, we talked for over an hour, updating each other on our lives, and apparently she'd missed me. That was kind of surprising. I told her I'd sort of assumed she moved on to more fabulous things and people without looking back. And really, I haven't had the greatest luck with best friends, so I'm sort of wary about this, but I think it's a safe bet we've both grown up since we last interacted.
In other news, I went to the doctor yesterday and have some pretty rad drugs. Still hacking, but not as much. Reeeeeeally would love to take a sick day, if the school wouldn't guilt me about it. Maybe I can just teach my morning classes tomorrow and go home before the afternoon ones begin.
