I've got this habit of not posting about my endeavors in case I fail and feel like a loser. I have plans for dealing with that, but not today. Instead of taking about everything that's gnawing at my life, I'd like to talk about Chuck!

Hallelujah. Little to no mention of the usual Chuck-and-Sarah pussyfooting. And thank God for this being a Shaw-free episode, man. I know he's there for drama and to put the Chuck/Sarah chestnut on the back burner by shifting focus, but he does it so poorly it's painful to watch.

When Chuck actually took the pill, I thought he was going to end up retching it back up...I'm still unclear about the actual effects of it, since he seemed to bounce back to his old self pretty fast. Does that mean it just wipes out emotions whenever he needs to focus, or is it an on/off switch constantly stuck in the on position?

Casey backstory! Hell to the yes!

When young!Casey (who, um, did not look or sound like Adam Baldwin in the least, but I'm letting that slide) was on the phone with his sweet, pretty, pastel-clad fiancee, I said to myself, "Well, at least she isn't pregnant."

Then she busted out that "I have something to tell you" line and I was ready to groan. Oops.

Also, I watched My Bodyguard the other day, Adam Baldwin's first big role, and convinced myself it was totally Casey's backstory. His character basically goes around being huge and protecting another fluffy-headed dweeb. And angsting about his brother dying. Leading me to hypothesize about him maybe enlisting in the army because something happens to said fluffy dweeb and, between that and his brother, it was just more than he could handle. It worked in my head, for real. I do recommend the film, by the way, for anyone who enjoys 80's high school movies and really large hair.

And hey! How convenient that Casey's ex lives so close and named their kid after him. And that he only finds this out once he's been stripped of his titles and booted into civilian life. Nothing but bonsai trees, a chair, and a map of the world. Is Buy More going to be his primary source of income now? He might just kill himself... Nah. He'll find some way to spend his time. And if that means drinking and groping the geekboy he's no longer honor-bound to protect, well, I'm not opposed. Or maybe he'll just cultivate hundreds of bonsai trees.

So, that said, he really laid a lot on the table by telling Chuck to go after what he wants before he loses the chance and regrets not doing anything. That's one of the most candid moments we've gotten out of him. Hearkens back to Chuck vs. the Undercover Lover, with Casey tipsily informing Chuck his idea of the American dream isn't having kids and a minivan and a Costco card. That doesn't preclude him from maybe still wondering what that would have been like, sometimes. And now that he no longer has his dream job, he's potentially got a lot more time on his hands to think about that.

Is there some kind of clause in his dismissal that prohibits him from making contact with Sarah and Chuck? I'd assume there would be, but I'd prefer there not be. Casey being the best part of the show and all.

Also, what with Chuck saying to Sarah he'd always be the guy he was when they first meet, then taking the pill, I was honestly expecting him to grab up a gun afterward. Glad he didn't, though. I feel like that show has a good hold on its old lightheartedness even though several antes have since been upped since those halcyon days of season one.

Oh, and House was on, too, I think.

And last, but not least, a very happy birthday to [livejournal.com profile] phinnia!
