recrudescence: (holy moses)
Yo, Santa, you probably hate me a little bit right now because I know my selections are all over the map. Then again, you were matched with me because you're comfortable writing in at least one of those areas, and that just makes me really happy. Have an eggnog!

First things first: Julie Taymor, Tanith Lee, Umberto Eco, and Alexandre Dumas have all rocked my world at various points in my life and I just about hit the ceiling when I was picking my fandoms because there was no way in hell I expected to see The Gods are Thirsty or The Name of the Rose listed, let alone both.

That said, I'm not dead-set on any one thing in particular. With any of these fandoms. I'm just pleased that someone like you exists to scribble about one of them. As long as writing is well-executed and believable, I'm down with it. I love when authors can convey an emotion or environment without spelling everything out or beating me over the head with it. Subtlety is sexy. Personally, I write in a rather abstract style most of the time (all my fic is memmed and tagged, if you want to have a look), but that doesn't mean that's the only style I enjoy reading. Not at all.

1. Across the Universe. I know the film wasn't everyone's cuppa and spawned a load of teenybopper wank about people suddenly finding the Beatles cool only after watching the movie (which I don't see a problem with, since it's not like they're ZOMG obscure and indie, y'know?), but I loved it. Yeah, the plot was a little lame, but everything was so gorgeous and trippy and, hell, I wrote Moulin Rouge fic for a little while anyway, so I'm all about overlooking gooey plotlines for the sake of pretty.

Point being, I freaking loved "With a Little Help From My Friends," especially the way it faded to black so we never see exactly what the boys got up to that night. I loved the relationship between Max and Jude and how they reflected so much of each other despite their differences. I kind of love the possibility of a sex-drugs-and-incest incident with Lucy, but that's not everyone's cuppa either, so I'll gladly gobble up anything about the boys. Prudence, for that matter, is just as good, because it's clear she's got more than a few stories to tell and we never got to find out the entirety of any of them.

2. The Count of Monte Cristo isn't all that different, as far as Franz and Albert go--you've got the more somber one and the more impulsive one and the ways they balance each other out. I know they're both revoltingly hetero in canon, and honestly I don't care if you choose to write them as friends or as something else--anything that looks into that bond somehow. Albert's hero-worship of Edmond is another aspect of his personality I wouldn't mind seeing someone delve into a little deeper. Smut is always excellent, by the way (and that goes for all these fandoms), but not a necessity by any means.

If you're not an Albert fan, Eugenie is also one of my favorites. Cross-dressing French lesbians FTW. What happened after the incident with Benedetto, exactly? When did she first realize she had feelings for Louise?

3. The Name of the Rose is a book I've been in love with for a decade now. I remember when I read it for the first time and was totally floored by the insinuation that there was hot monk sex going on. With that in mind, Adelmo is a character who intrigues me because he kicks off the entire story by dying--he's already out of the picture when the story starts, but he's also at the center of it. Anything about him, whether it's him rhapsodizing about his illuminations or Berenger perving on him during vespers or Adso chronicling his own thoughts on the matter, I'll be happy.

4. Finally, The Gods are Thirsty. God. So much love for this book. It sprawls all over the place, is written in about seventeen different voices, features a ton of characters who aren't particularly sympathetic and pretty much all end up headless, and I adore it. Danton/Desmoulins would be cool, as would a look into what Desmoulins got up to in his school days with Fabre and Robespierre. I'm really pretty open on this one. Smut is wonderful, but like I said before, as long as it's written well and makes me believe it, I'm good.

I hope you found this helpful instead of frustrating--seriously, just enjoy yourself and I will, too. Best of luck!
