Ugh. I've been laying low lately because I feel like every little thing has the potential to make me mildly pissed off and no one really needs to listen to that.

Still trying to catch up on fic-reading and comment-leaving, still trying to get back into the swing of writing things. Only, I keep guilting myself every time I try to work on something because I get irked for not finishing anything original.

However, I really think I want to teach in Korea. I've been reading up on the pros and cons, and it's got some of the best deals in Asia, which is where the demand for English teachers is highest. Tomorrow, I'm going to talk to the registrar at my university about getting a few transcripts mailed over so I can get them notarized; I also need to see if my current criminal background check is applicable or if I'll need to have a new one done. Then I get everything mailed off to my school of choice and wait for my visa to get processed.

Thing is, I can't not work while I'm going through all this, so I'm poking around for something to tide me over. I've barely been back in the country a week, and I've already got cabin fever from staying at my mother's and not having a job. I've never not had a job--even when I was starting a new one, it was always the day after I finished up with the previous one. Productivity has to happen.

I really am excited about Korea. A little nervous, but mostly just glad for a chance to travel and teach. I hope everything works out.

Woo hoo! Teaching English in Asia is awesome. (I did it in Japan for a year.) I'm crossing my fingers it all works out the way you want.

Srsly? Wow, the things I don't know about my flist. That's really cool. Thanks for the well-wishing!

I've known people that have taught in Korea (sadly not well though) but the collective experience seems to be positive. <3

I keep guilting myself every time I try to work on something because I get irked for not finishing anything original.

Um. Yeah. Been there. A few times ... er, okay, a few times this week.

Go us. Or something. =)

I think it's amplified by the fact that I'm still job-hunting now, so it's kind of a "ZOMG, how can you be writing for fun and not for profit?" deal.

*hides sad-looking copies of resume* Um, yeah. I know a few things about that angle myself. <3

*hugs*

Also, if you just want to get a job right away for a short period of time, you might consider calling a temp agency.

Yep, I've thrown my info in a few different directions and I've got a couple interviews for temporary positions coming up. Thanks. =)

Hope Korea works out for you. It does sound like it could be an interesting experience. :-)

I hope so. It's a little scary, but mostly I can't wait.

I taught English in Korea eons ago, and had the time of my life! I really recommend it.

[identity profile] recrudescence.livejournal.com 2008-07-07 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Seriously? People on my flist keep coming out of the woodwork with stories like this. That's awesome!

[identity profile] jaybee65.livejournal.com 2008-07-07 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
That's the wonderful thing about LJ: you can pretty much find someone who has done anything you can think of!

I actually went there twice. The first time was the traditional junior year abroad thing at Yonsei University in Seoul, then I went back after graduation for another year, doing part-time postgraduate courses and part-time teaching at private academies. I lived in Seoul both times, but I traveled all over the place (and to Japan, too). Korea's a wonderful country and is compact enough that you can see a large chunk of it in a reasonable amount of time.

Hmmm. I just might have to pick your brain sometime in the near future.

Getting to see Japan would be excellent--I just want to take a little time to travel before I seriously settle anywhere, and teaching abroad lets me soak up all the new cultures I can while giving something back, too, so everyone's happy, right?

[identity profile] jaybee65.livejournal.com 2008-07-14 02:24 am (UTC)(link)
Feel free to pick my brain anytime! Though some of my information will be long out of date -- it's been quite a few years since I lived there.

As for travel to Japan, I took the ferry from Busan to Shimonoseki, then traveled by train (and sometimes hitchhiking, though I *really* don't recommend that!) to Hiroshima, Osaka, Kyoto, and points along the way. It was pretty economical and loads of fun.

Going to Korea would be cool. How long would you be there?

[identity profile] recrudescence.livejournal.com 2008-07-07 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
For a year, most likely. I sent off for my transcripts today and plan to get my background check completed and sent to the secretary of state tomorrow. And I'm researching schools like a fiend.

I'm teaching in Korea, starting in my school Sept. 1st.

[identity profile] recrudescence.livejournal.com 2008-07-13 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, neat. Have you ever been before? How long is your contract? I'm still getting all my docs together, but I don't see any reason getting a visa should be any trouble.
