Ugh, I'm not sure how to begin explaining this since it's really just navel-gazing at the core, but the short of it is this: I like order, I like making mixes, I've titled some of my Inception fics based on songs, and I wanted to see how those songs might fit together.

As of today, I've got forty-six Inception fics up on the AO3 (the fuuuuuuck), fifteen of which are titled based on songs.

And verily, a mix--with a teaspoon of meta and a walk down memory lane--was born!

If you just want the music, go here. If you want to hear me babble about it, keep reading.

01. Aviary Ghost - Numbers Aren't Right

This was the first fic I ever posted in this fandom, back when I was young and innocent and didn't even know what knotting was: Numbers Aren't Right, an ode to Eames's mouth through a dub-con lens.

02. Noe Venable - Midsummer Night's Dream

so I run out, but not away
shooting off sparks into the dark
out in the street

Run Out, But Not Away aka the one where Arthur is actually Neil from Mysterious Skin.

03. Modest Mouse - Baby Blue Sedan

and it's hard to be a human being
and it's harder as anything else

Hard to be Human, my one published foray into Arthur/Cobb.

04. Mumford & Sons - The Cave

'cause I have other things to fill my time
you take what is yours and I'll take mine

Take What's Yours and I'll Take Mine, the one where Eames forges himself into a naughty schoolboy and Arthur punishes him. Fuck you, kink meme.

05. Modest Mouse - Never-Ending Math Equation

infinity spirals out creation
we're on the tip of its tongue, and it is saying
we ain't sure where you stand
you ain't machines and you ain't land

Infinity Spirals Out Creation, where Ariadne has a hard time dealing with the aftereffects of shared dreaming.

06. Sun Kil Moon - Never-Ending Math Equation

Once more, with spirit! And because I like this cover. And because Trojie created a stellar remix of the aforementioned fic that everyone should go read if they haven't already: Infinity Spirals Out Creation (the Leave No Man Behind remix)

07. The Cells - Silver Cloud

I'm cheating a bit with this one since I didn't technically swipe anything from the song itself. I did, however, listen to it a lot during when I was making Arthur's life miserable a year or so ago. The album it comes from is called We Can Replace You.

We Can Replace You, the one with death and torture and stuff.

08. Noe Venable - 3 AM Call

calling from the ward where they don't accept flowers
where the walls are made of metal
full of pull-out drawers

calling from the ward where they don’t accept flowers (proxy remix), very much a doom-and-gloom fic, also a reworking of jibrailis's vastly superior Write your name on the dotted line

09. Emilie Autumn - Prologue: Across the Sky

take no answer but the one you find
I have put my faith in aberrations of your kind

Faith in Aberrations: ENEMA PORN, WHAT.

010. Lady Gaga - Americano

in the mountains, las campanas están sonando
todo los chicos, y los chicos se están besando

y los chicos se están besando, the one where Eames proposes and Arthur surprises him by having emotions.

011. Rykarda Parasol - Maggie

and what comes from sorrow made of black tar sin?
body frail, been to jail, may never wake again

body frail, been to jail: Arthur has a tramp stamp, Eames inspects it thoroughly.

012. Woodpigeon - My Denial in Argyle

I should have walked, but I'd already paid
another hour, another day
It's not a bother, I don't mind to wait
I'm counting down to the big okay

Counting Down to Another Day, aka the one with all the cuddling and cockblocking.

013. Florence + the Machine - Strangeness and Charm

and atom to atom, oh can you feel it on me, love
and pattern to pattern, oh can you see it on me, love
atom to atom, oh what's the matter with me, love

Atom to Atom, Pattern to Pattern: MY FIRST MPREG.

014. Tori Amos - A Sorta Fairytale

I don't know what takes hold
out there in the desert cold

What Takes Hold: Eames has some very damning gaps in his memories, but Arthur remembers everything.

015. Rasputina - The Olde Headboard

you make experiments, you try to
teach a lesson and then take a stand
a fake handshake don't make no man

A Fake Handshake Don't Make No Man, aka the one where Eames is straight and Arthur goes for him anyway.

016. Feist - One Year AD

bring all the spaces together
and all the silences ever

Bring All the Spaces Together, aka the one with mpreg and crossdressing and things I never would have written without encountering this fandom. THANK YOU, INCEPTION. I REALLY DIDN'T NEED MY INNOCENCE ANYWAY.

For the record? Titles are something I've never felt I was very good at. Like, for a long time, I went with the "just slap the first remotely relevant ten-dollar word on it and call it a title" method, then later graduated to the "read a few poems and use the first remotely relevant phrase you come across" method, and occasionally I've gone with the hoary old chestnut of opening iTunes and yanking out whatever catches the ear. And now I actually have a spreadsheet of potential titles I can draw from if I ever find myself really drawing a blank.

... okay, this is sincerely cool. The meta and the fic titles and the verses they came from (the 'verses they came from?) is just ... I really like this. ♥

Thanks. :)

It's something I'd been thinking of doing for a while, as well as being a new way of looking at my fandom output.

This is awesome. My brain links music to stories all the time, too, so it's neat to hear how other people do it.

However, Mediafire is on to your shenanigans, and won't let me download. Bah.

That's odd, since I did a test-download right before posting and mediafire has been pretty reliable in the past. Could it be an adblock issue?

Nope, it says, "Permission denied. 'Never Ending Math Equation (Album)' by Modest Mouse can be downloaded from one of these fine retailers," and helpfully offers a link to Amazon.

Huh, I just downloaded the whole thing and opened it without a hitch. And that one track being denied shouldn't affect everything else...weird.

(Just swapped out the link to be on the safe side!)
