Finished my last grad school class, waiting for the grades to roll in or for the university to laugh in my face and make me do it all over again!

In the meantime, I'm doing a thing where all y'all can pick a number and I'll post an excerpt from the corresponding work in my WIP/stuff-that-I-will-never-actually-finish folder.

Give me a number 1-74 (either in a comment or on Tumblr is fine) and let's get cracking! Feel free to repost and let other people see what you've got in your own WIP folder.

It's officially New Year's Eve here, so I'm going to do something I haven't done for a little while and get my meme on.

This year, I've posted twenty-seven fics (all Inception except for one Glee and one Yuletide fandom, four of which don't currently have my name attached to them) and posted slightly over 150,000 words. This doesn't include WIPs (of which there are many) or cracked-out chats-turned-quasi-fic. Not too bad for working and going to school! Fandom is the best outlet ever.

first lines of each, which actually reads like a very disjointed fic itself )

Conclusion, goals, and other boring introspective thoughts: need to write more stuff involving Yusuf because I really do like him, more stuff involving Cobb because his dynamic with Arthur deserves all the exploration, and more stuff where smut isn't necessarily the focus. I think my ~downfall~ this year was that I turned to the kink meme whenever I needed to play with something new, and while that was fun and I generally try to at least give my porn context, I'd like to focus a little more on writing things where the sex is either peripheral or incidental as opposed to front and center. Um. Not that I'm swearing off smut, for the record; I have way too many half-edited fics for that. Just trying to branch out some more instead of relying on more of the same.

I also want to give Grimmfic a whirl because I love that sort of fairy-tale-with-a-twist thing, and try to play in some more obscure fandoms by writing a few NYR fics. Non-fandom wise, I want to try and get some erotica (but contextualized erotica!) published and actually get paid in something other than a copy of the publication itself. Not looking to make a living, just want to see if I can hop that hurdle.

Oh, and harsher punishments for parole violators.

Concentrating is hard.

Step 1: Put your music player on shuffle.
Step 2: Post the first line (or first and second line if it's completely impossible) from the first 15 songs that play, no matter how embarrassing.
Step 3: Strike out the songs when someone guesses both artist and track correctly.
Step 4: Looking them up on Google or any other search engine is CHEATING!
Step 5: If you like the game, post your own.

1. Today I strike out on my own ("Toy Soldiers" by Carbon Leaf, guessed by [livejournal.com profile] the_samosaurus)
2. Goodbye, Norma Jean (Kate Bush cover of "Candle in the Wind" by Elton John, guessed by [livejournal.com profile] sandoz_iscariot)
3. In the dear old village churchyard I can see a mossy mound
4. Some boy you are, to take me by the hand
5. Goldenrod and the 4-H stone ("Casimir Pulaski Day" by Sufjan Stevens, guessed by [livejournal.com profile] silentsiren47)
6. Now Anna Thompson had a day job
7. Like a butterfly, she crossed all the lines
8. Dear Wally, I'm writing this letter sincerely
9. When the wrath of this wide open sky is upon us
10. Cheated by the opposite of love ("Cheated Hearts" by the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, guessed by [livejournal.com profile] ohfreckle)
11. Free, people are free, how can a fee enslave us? (Urinetown: Act One Finale, guessed by [livejournal.com profile] little_missmimi)
12. Sing, Muse, of the passion of the pistol ("The Perfect Crime #2" by the Decemberists, guessed by [livejournal.com profile] unvarnishedtale)
13. A minister's daughter in the north
14. It's been a long time since I came around (Lady Gaga's "You and I," guessed by [livejournal.com profile] jibrailis)
15. There are times when we question the things we know

Tomorrow, I take my assessment for placement with this tutoring company I'm going to work with, then the next day I have two interviews and a university open house, and I'm going to spend the next couple weeks polishing grad school applications to a high shine. Maybe more fic, for when I get overwhelmed. Whew.

This past weekend was pretty rad. I got to hang out with [livejournal.com profile] hannahrorlove, [livejournal.com profile] deelaundry, and [livejournal.com profile] ayalesca, and narrowly missed bumping into [livejournal.com profile] bironic (and, by association, BILL NYE THE SCIENCE GUY). There was ice-cream eating and book-perusing and sculpture-garden wandering and, of course, we talked smack about every single one of you. &hearts

And now for something completely different, [livejournal.com profile] soda_and_capes has selected seven of my, admittedly rather vague, interests, which I will now elucidate. I use my interests field as more of a commonplace book for things that have stood out for me at some point in my life, so this is a nice trip down memory lane.

dreaming only geese
This is a reference to a book of Inuit folktales called The Girl Who Dreamed Only Geese, which I loved when I was younger. Also, the illustrations are by Leo and Diane Dillon, whose work will never not amaze me.

heautontimoroumenos
A poem by Charles Baudelaire, who was a BFF of mine during my emo phase and a harbinger of my obsession with French lit. It means "The Self-Tormentor" and, imho, Roy Campbell's translation is the best.

marrying tomorrow
This one can be taken two ways. One, I think of it as the act of flinging yourself forward and making the next day as awesome as you can, which is something I should try to do more often. And two, when the main character in Maurice (great book, great movie) admits to being "an unspeakable of the Oscar Wilde sort," he undergoes a quick physical and is told he could "marry tomorrow" if he wanted to, BECAUSE THAT'S ALL THAT MATTERS AND NOT THE FACT THAT HE'S ACTUALLY GAYER THAN GAY.

uli saying thank you
Uli Herzner was a contestant on season three of Project Runway. She was so talented and sweet and had perfect manners and more people should be like that, myself included.

three chartreuse buzzards
A song I learned at Girl Scout camp that no one else has ever heard of. It kicks ass, I swear.

speaking seventeen languages badly
Representative of my own linguistic foibles and also a quote from The Last Unicorn, one of my favorite books and movies.

marinating in liminality
My default status! I love liminality (the process of transferring between two states without belonging to either) because it's the antithesis of pigeonholing. Victor Turner, another BFF from back when I was an anthropology major, sold me on it.

If you'd like me to pick seven of yours, just say the word.

Bring it.

Today I learned a new Korean swear word, and also that there's a new restaurant thirty seconds away from my apartment that proudly serves dog meat.

I was tagged for this a while back. From [livejournal.com profile] finding_jay:

1. Grab the nearest book.
2. Open the book to page 123.
3. Find the fifth sentence.
4. Post the text of the next 4 sentences on your LJ along with these instructions.
5. Don't you dare dig for that "cool" or "intellectual" book in your closet! I know you were thinking about it! Just pick up whatever is closest.
6. Tag five people.

The book is White Out: The Continuing Significance of Racism and yes, it really is the closest one. I have a hard time listening to nonfiction in audiobook form, so not many of my physical books here are are fiction.

"Wayne plays Colonel Kirby, the usual invincible John Wayne military commander, a Green Beret who leads all the operations and never suffers a scratch. Unlike the other white messiahs in the movies, Kirby is never tempted, never doubts, and never develops. The Green Berets is static, with many battle scenes but no dramatic tension.

"The movie opens with a press conference in which the army explains that the United States is fighting for the South Vietnamese, who need and want Americans to protect them from the brutal Communists."

Said book also contains a card from [livejournal.com profile] hannahrorlove, currently doubling as a bookmark. Happy slightly late birthday, Hannah!

ALSO. A huge, hearty thank you to [livejournal.com profile] tripperfunster, whose glorious package of Canadian awesomeness arrived yesterday. YOU FOUND MIKE & IKES, OMGGGGG! I have been chowing down like a pro and all my Korean coworkers think ketchup chips are amazing. I'm going to frame RSL and put him on my fanart wall.
